How the AcuMedic Fertility Clinic is different

It is very common to experience difficulties having children with about 1 in 7 couples struggling to conceive. It is also relatively common for women to suffer from multiple miscarriages.

Our clinical director Dr. Lily Hua Yu is head of the AcuMedic Fertility Clinic in London and has successfully helped hundreds of couples to have children. She is one of the most renowned Chinese Medical doctors in Europe and has over 34 years of clinical experience. Her approach to fertility treatment is unique and pioneering, drawing upon her many decades of experience and special interest in this field. Her approach is caring and informative with a focus on results. Her clinic wall is covered with pictures of babies that she has helped to bring into the world.

Since introducing this Specialist Clinic we are proud to have helped many hundreds of men and women start families, many of whom had been failed by Western medical techniques (including IVF) and were ready to give up completely.

Our Chinese Medical Fertility Clinic is very experienced in working with patients undergoing other Western fertility treatments and can tailor our treatment to complement and improve the chances of success. Our reputation is so high that we often work hand in hand with Western Medical doctors to tailor a treatment programme specifically for our patient’s needs.

How we can help you

‘Infertility’ is defined as a person who is biologically unable to have children. It is a very severe diagnosis which can cause a great deal of emotional distress and leave patients feeling hopeless. In most cases, this diagnosis is wrong and a couple is actually SUB-FERTILE – experiencing difficulty having children. With the right treatment, the majority of subfertile couples are able to bring happy and healthy babies into the world.

For more detailed information please read our free guide on Chinese Medicine for fertility.

The vast majority of sub-fertility causes are non-structural. Although many doctors will point out structural reasons such as endometriosis, fibroids or polycystic ovarian syndrome, the fact is that these conditions are a symptom of imbalances in the body and are reversible using acupuncture and Chinese herbs. As long as these conditions are treated quickly enough, they are unlikely to leave any structural problem that would cause infertility. Most causes of sub-fertility are actually treatable and reversible conditions.

The benefit of choosing Chinese Medicine and acupuncture at AcuMedic to help with sub-fertility is that Dr. Lily will seek to completely rebalance your body. This means that you will feel an improvement in your general health, energy and emotions. Another benefit is that Chinese medical treatment, including acupuncture, is absolutely complementary with Western treatments. The two medicines can work well together to help you have a healthy little baby.

Many studies have shown that using acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for fertility can dramatically improve the success of any conventional treatments (like IVF). AcuMedic in London usually treat couples who are also seeking conventional medical treatments and their doctors have found that this integrative approach has such a good effect that many have started recommending patients to us. Our expert Chinese medical care and acupuncture treatment are complementary and safe to be used in conjunction with any Western medical treatment for fertility.

The AcuMedic Fertility Clinic in London provides acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment for female fertility issues such as problems with Ovulation; Poor Egg Quality; Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS); Ammenorrhea (absence of periods); early Menopause; Endometriosis; Hyperprolactinemia.

+ About the Acupuncture at AcuMedic

Acupuncture treatment is available all over the world but not all acupuncturists are the same. Many acupuncturists in the West are only trained in a small modality of acupuncture such as trigger point acupuncture or perhaps 5 Element acupuncture. AcuMedicin London treats with syndrome acupuncture which is based on the complete system of theories in Chinese Medicine (including trigger point and 5 Element). This is authentic acupuncture treatment as practised in China and is based on Syndrome Differentiation diagnosis.

True Syndrome acupuncture is not easy to find in the West and requires many years of training. Syndrome acupuncture at AcuMedic in London is performed only by CMIR-registered doctors with a minimum of 10 years clinical experience. The CMIR (Chinese Medical Institute and Register) is an organisation with strict codes of conduct and qualification requirements. Our doctors are sufficiently experienced that many of them teach Western Doctors in acupuncture.

+ How it works

Dr. Lily will assess the entire individual and does not isolate fertility from the body’s other functions such as digestion, circulation, diet and lifestyle related complaints. She often gives consideration to small signs and symptoms that Western medicine may regard as irrelevant in order to understand the underlying syndrome that is causing fertility problems.

Chinese medical treatment for infertility involves the use of acupuncture and herbal prescriptions to treat the particular syndromes and reverse the imbalances in the body so that it regains fertility.

Western doctors look at the body as a machine with parts that break down and are fixed by intervention or drugs. This is a very fast acting approach which is suitable for acute problems. Chinese Medicine views a person as a system of interrelated structures, fluids and energy (including emotions) which must constantly be kept in balance in order to be healthy. The majority of cases of subfertility are caused by conditions which are not simple structural problems but relate to the bigger picture of the overall health and balance of the body. In many cases the cause is actually unexplained by conventional medicine, whereas Chinese medicine is much better equipped to treat these larger and more abstract conditions.

In Chinese Medicine, reproductive health is primarily influenced by the health of Kidneys. The Kidney essence feeds the reproductive organs and maintains their health. If the Kidneys become weak (most commonly due to age and sedentiary lifestyle) then the sexual health of the person declines. Men will start to lose their sex drive and sperm production becomes less efficient, women will also lose their sex drive, ability to conceive and this eventually causes menopause. It is therefore essential to boost the Kidneys.

The Kidneys are directly affected by two other organs – the Liver and the Spleen. The liver is the organ which governs emotions and therefore during periods of emotional pain or stress the Liver will weaken which will in turn weaken the Kidneys. The Spleen is the organ most affected by diet. A poor diet will cause the Spleen to overwork and this will also weaken the Kidneys.

Thus, Chinese Medicine explains how emotions, diet, age and lifestyle can affect your fertility.

+ What to Expect

Whenever AcuMedic patients come to see our fertility specialist Dr. Lily for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, we prefer to see both the man and the woman. Dr. Lily and her team will assesses both of them through a series of questions, observation of any medical reports, tongue analysis and pulse diagnosis. From this initial consultation Dr. Lily will build a diagnoses and determine which particular Chinese Medical syndromes each person suffers from and will also explain how these syndromes are affecting the fertility of the couple. It is then decided if the man, woman or both require treatment.

Dr. Lily will explain the details of the treatment required (usually acupuncture and Chinese herbs) and her strategy for individualising the treatment so that it can reverse the syndromes affecting your fertility.

+ Diagnosis and Consultation

There are four main diagnostic methods in Chinese Medicine which are observing, pulse diagnosis, questioning and listening. Each method has a unique function in the process of collecting different clinical information. Therefore all four diagnostic methods must be used to make an accurate diagnosis of your health and individualise the treatment according to your needs.

Observing involves looking at all the outward manifestations of your condition. This is done by observing your general vitality, complexion, figure and skin. One of the most well known parts of observing is tongue diagnosis. The tongue is like a mirror showing the state of your internal organs. The AcuMedic doctor will be able to judge the condition of your essential energy (Qi), identify the location of the affected parts inside your body, determine what is exactly is wrong and identify how the disease might progress just from looking at your tongue.

There are over 50 different pulse types and the AcuMedic doctor will take your pulse on both wrists to determine which pulse type you have. Your pulse is identified in terms of depth, speed, strength, shape and rhythm. Your pulse is an indicator of how Qi and blood are moving around your body, therefore how well your internal organs are functioning. From your pulse the doctor can determine a great deal about your physical and emotional condition.

The doctor will ask you a huge variety of questions to learn about your symptoms and general lifestyle. It may seem like some of these questions are odd, but it all goes towards building a complete picture of you and your health. No matter how trivial something might seem to you, tell your doctor. No symptom that you have is unrelated or unimportant to your diagnosis. It is also very useful for your doctor to see the results of any medical tests you have had so make sure you bring them along to your first consultation and whenever you get new results through.

Once the doctor has finished diagnosing you, they will tell you about your particular Chinese Medical syndrome. These syndromes often have funny sounding names, like Liver Qi Stagnation or Kidney Yin Deficiency, but do not let that put you off. They will accurately explain why you have the symptoms you have and therefore what treatment you need.

+ The Treatment

You will most probably be recommended acupuncture and Chinese Herbs for fertility issues.

For acupuncture you will be asked to lie on the bed and remove some clothing to receive acupuncture. The doctor will provide you with a blanket to cover yourself. Micro-fine needles will be inserted and you will be left alone to relax for about 20-40 minutes.

Please be aware that this is crucial treatment time for the acupuncture to have a therapeutic effect and you have not been forgotten. Just relax and enjoy the sensation of the acupuncture treatment (many patients will fall asleep). If you need to call the Clinic reception then there is a bell to alert us to come and talk with you.

Usually, the acupuncture needles do not hurt when they are inserted, although if a lot of blocked energy has built up at one area of your body, you may feel a pricking and pulling sensation as the Qi begins to flow again in there. Most people find acupuncture incredibly relaxing.

AcuMedic doctors only use sterile disposable acupuncture needles. AcuMedic actually invented the disposable acupuncture needle.

For people who are afraid of acupuncture needles, please speak to your doctor who may recommend a different treatment based on electro-acupuncture instead of needles. Electro-acupuncture works in the same way as conventional acupuncture, but instead of using needles, an electronic pointer is used to stimulate the acupuncture points on the body.

After or before acupuncture you will have an extensive consultation with Dr Lily who will tailor a herbal prescription specifically for you and your condition.

+ After the Treatment

When the treatment is completed you will be taken to the AcuMedic Herbal Dispensary to collect your Chinese herbal medicine prescription.

Many of those treated by Dr. Lily at the AcuMedic Fertility Clinic with acupuncture and Chinese herbs fall pregnant within 6 months and some have conceived within weeks. We normally recommend a course of 3-6 months of treatment.

After the treatment you should feel an overall improvement in your physical and mental state. You should feel more relaxed, calm but also energised more positive. You might notice improvements in your appetite as well as a more restful sleep. All these are signs that your body is getting stronger and more conducive to fertility.
