What makes this cosmetic acupuncture different
The cosmetic acupuncture at AcuMedic in London is applied by a specialist in Chinese Cosmetology who will also give you a brief Chinese Medical diagnosis in order to uncover and treat internal or lifestyle related conditions which may be affecting your skin.
It is important to note that this is a natural treatment and that the needles used are ultra fine to minimize any discomfort. It is very important that clients refrain from drinking any alcohol before their appointment as this causes vasodilation which increases the risk of minor bruising from the needles.

+ About the Acupuncture at AcuMedic
Acupuncture treatment is available all over the world but not all acupuncturists are the same. Many acupuncturists in the West are only trained in a small modality of acupuncture such as trigger point acupuncture or perhaps 5 Element acupuncture. AcuMedicin London treats with syndrome acupuncture which is based on the complete system of theories in Chinese Medicine (including trigger point and 5 Element). This is authentic acupuncture treatment as practised in China and is based on Syndrome Differentiation diagnosis.
+ How it works
Cosmetic acupuncture is a powerful treatment for anti-ageing. It works by invigorating Qi (the essential energy of the body) and blood flow to the skin as well as treating internal conditions (such as excess heat or blood stasis) which may be leading to aged, aggravated or dull looking skin. It is used directly on fine lines and wrinkles to reduce their appearance naturally.
Unlike other muscles in the body, the face is the only area where the muscles are attached directly to the skin. If not exercised and nourished, the face muscles weaken leading to sagging skin and fine lines- the signs of old age.
By inserting fine needles on various points on the face, neck and head, cosmetic acupuncture stimulates the flow of blood to your skin and facial muscles, feeding them nutrients, oxygen and vital energy. After treatment, skin appears brighter and toned.

+ What to expect
During your 40-minute treatment an AcuMedic Chinese Cosmetologist will provide you with a brief Chinese Medical diagnosis, consultation and cosmetic acupuncture treatment. If you are prescribed raw Chinese herbs (optional) then this can take up to half an hour to prepare after your appointment.
+ Diagnosis and Consultation
There are four main diagnostic methods in Chinese Medicine which are observing, pulse diagnosis, questioning and listening. Each method has a unique function in the process of collecting different clinical information about your skin. Therefore all four diagnostic methods must be used to make an accurate diagnosis of your health, understand any skin conditions you might be having and individualise the facial acupuncture treatment according to your personal needs.
Observing involves looking at all the outward manifestations of your internal health. This is done by observing your general vitality, complexion, figure and skin. One of the most well known parts of observing is tongue diagnosis. The tongue is like a mirror showing the state of your internal organs. The AcuMedic doctor will be able to judge the condition of your essential energy (Qi), identify the location of the affected parts inside your body and identify any imbalances. This is crucial for understanding how your internal health is influencing your skin and how this relationship should be regulated to improve your appearance.
There are over 50 different pulse types and the AcuMedic doctor will take your pulse on both wrists to determine which pulse type you have. Your pulse is identified in terms of depth, speed, strength, shape and rhythm. Your pulse is an indicator of how Qi and blood are moving around your body (therefore how well your internal organs are functioning) which is a vital process for keeping your skin and eyes nourished and your complexion bright. From your pulse the doctor can determine a great deal about your physical and emotional state.
The doctor will ask you a huge variety of questions to learn about your general lifestyle and any skin complaints you might be having. It may seem like some of these questions are odd, but it all goes towards building a complete picture of you and your health. No matter how trivial something might seem to you, tell your doctor. No symptom that you have is unrelated or unimportant to your skin.
Once the doctor has finished diagnosing you, they will tell you about your particular Chinese Medical syndrome. These syndromes often have funny sounding names, like Liver Qi Stagnation or Kidney Yin Deficiency, but do not let that put you off. They will accurately explain why you have the symptoms you have and therefore how cosmetic acupuncture should be used in your particular case.
If the doctor feels that you should take some Chinese herbal medicines in addition to cosmetic acupuncture then an optional prescription will be written for you. This is charged separately to your treatment. The prescription may be in the form of raw Chinese herbs or herbal extract capsules which are assembled and dispensed by our expert dispensary on our premises. Specialist Chinese herbal skin lotions and ointments are also available on prescription. Chinese herbs provide the essential nutrition the body needs to overcome any physical, mental or emotional imbalances and is based on the same theories as Syndrome acupuncture.
+ Treatment
After a brief consultation you will be asked to lie on the bed to receive cosmetic acupuncture. Micro-fine needles will be inserted and you will be left alone to relax for 25-30 minutes.
Please be aware that this is crucial treatment time for the acupuncture to have a therapeutic effect and you have not been forgotten. Just relax and enjoy the sensation of the acupuncture treatment (many patients will fall asleep). If you need to call the Clinic reception then there is a bell to alert us to come and talk with you. After the required period of time the doctor will return to remove the acupuncture needles.
Acupuncture is a very relaxing experience and if you are still awake then all you will be feeling is a mild and brief pricking sensation, followed by a tingling feeling, letting you know it works. The discomfort of acupuncture needles is very dependent on the patient with most people experiencing very little pain, but it is at worst a mild and brief pricking sensation followed by a tingling feeling as the Qi is stimulated.
AcuMedic doctors only use sterile disposable acupuncture needles. AcuMedic actually invented the disposable acupuncture needle.
Cosmetic acupuncture without needles is also available. For people who are afraid of acupuncture needles, please speak to your doctor who may recommend a different treatment based on electro-acupuncture instead of needles. Electro-acupuncture works in the same way as conventional acupuncture, but instead of using needles, an electronic pointer is used to stimulate the acupuncture points on the body.
+ After the Treatment
You should see some results after your first treatment (especially the following day), however you really need about 3 sessions (over around 5-6 weeks) before you will notice the actual effects.
+ What the clients say
